In our popular series of articles titled "Stores with HAA", we visit stores that carry HAA.
This time we introduce Sudachido, a select store in Enmachi, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto.
We spoke with the owner, Miyuki Ota, about the store, HAA, and how she spends her free time.
A place to enjoy pure encounters with things
Take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station and ride for about 10 minutes through the city. Get off at Enmachi Station and walk through a residential area for about two minutes, and you will see a three-story building with impressive semi-oval windows. Upon entering the brightly lit store, Mr. Ota greeted us with a soft smile.
--What kind of store is Sudachido?
"Sudachido is a select store that sells vintage and domestic brand items such as vases, tableware, and objets d'art. We carry items purchased overseas, works by artists, and bags from KENTO HASHIGUCHI, located on the third floor of the same building."
- All of the items are very nice. By the way, what is the origin of the store name, Sudachido?
"Actually, it is the name of a rabbit that lives with us. It's hard to read because it's in unfamiliar kanji, and I think many people can't imagine what the store is about, but I think that's okay too. I would be happy if you could come here without any preconceptions."
The most important thing is to have an intuition. What is important is intuition.
"Sudachido handles a wide variety of items.
"We are trying to create a store where people can intuitively enjoy encounters with things. When you encounter something wonderful, you feel an intuitive crush, or you are touched by it. I want to cherish that feeling myself, and I want my customers to feel it as well.
"For this reason, for example, we basically do not specify information such as when, by whom, and where vintage items purchased overseas were made.
--This is a way to enjoy the encounter with things in a flat, unfiltered state, isn't it?
"Yes, that's right. Of course, we have a good grasp of information when making purchases. However, we felt that it sometimes gets in the way of the customer's selection process. Of course, there are those who want to know the information, so please feel free to contact us in that case."
"What made you want to value your intuition?
"I myself have a section of my life where I live pretty much by intuition.
"I myself live my life based on my intuition, and I believe that what I sense with all my five senses is never wrong. I think that intuition cannot be underestimated. In addition, I would like to value changes in the way I feel with age. I am not bound by anything, and I am happy if I can honestly reflect what I am feeling now in my store, so that customers can enjoy it as well.
--We are very grateful to Mr. Ota for his contribution to the text on the wrapping paper for the renewal of HAA for bath Hibi (10 packets). Thank you very much for your wonderful writing.
"I had known about HAA for a long time, so I was surprised and happy when I was asked to contribute a sentence to the theme of "Relax". You contributed a sentence titled "Feelings on Holidays.
--You wrote about the happiness of cooking for yourself on your days off and soaking slowly in the bath, which made me feel happy when I read your essay.
"It is an ordinary day, but if you are busy or don't have time to spare for yourself, I don't think you can feel it. I wrote about the times when I was able to properly catch that happiness."
--You started carrying HAA in April, how have customers responded?
"Since we have it in front of the cash register, I have more opportunities to talk over the counter with customers who pick it up. The other day, a customer said, "It's just an ordinary day, but I'd like to give it to you as a gift.
--A gift for an ordinary day is wonderful!
"HAA's items have wonderful designs, but we are also particular about what's inside, so we recommend them wholeheartedly to our customers. We hope you will purchase these items as gifts for birthdays and other occasions, as well as for someone's start or celebration."
--In HAA, we ask everyone to call the time when you can take a deep breath "HAA time". What is HAA time for you, Ota-san?
"It is exactly a bath. When I take a bath, I feel like I switch from work mode to relaxation mode. When I come home after work, my brain is still in work mode before I take a bath. It is only after the bath that my brain completely turns off. After taking a bath, I don't work, but spend time relaxing by reading a book, etc."
--Taking a bath turns you on and off, doesn't it?
"Yes, it does. Every day I realize the importance of making such a switch by myself. When I work by myself, I have a lot to do even on my days off, and I can do as much work as I want at home. I think about it all the time, I work on the computer all the time, and I never get a break."
--I totally understand.
"That's why I think it's important to have a switch. However, it is still difficult to maintain a comfortable on/off balance. I think many people are like that. That is why we are very happy if our customers who visit ...... Sudachido can find their own HAA time, whether it is enjoying encountering things or relaxing by taking a relaxing bath. We look forward to working with you in the future.
